About This Spot

Stepping into Top Notch Texas BBQ in Childress feels like breaking into a lively, welcoming patch of true Texas spirit. This is a place where the steady hum of conversation and the occasional clatter of plates create a warm, unpretentious atmosphere that invites locals and travelers alike to settle in and linger a while. The spacious dining room, roomy enough to dodge the typical bustle of a popular BBQ joint, hums with an easygoing energy that shifts from midday calm to a lively crescendo come evening.

The pace here suits the rhythms of small-town life — friendly and unhurried, yet attentive enough so you never feel forgotten. Conversations float through the air along with the enticing wafts of smoked meat and sizzling sides, hinting at the thoughtful care behind every dish. The menu reads like a love letter to Texas comfort food, where smoky ribs and sliced brisket meet the humble pleasures of chicken fried steak and crispy fried mushrooms. It’s less about formal tastes and more about sharing moments around a hearty meal, with familiar flavors served just right.

Drinking a glass of sweet tea or cracking open a cold Mexican Coke feels like the natural companion to the tender ribs and bold sausages, bringing a gentle sweetness to balance the savory, smoky richness. The hearty sides — from cowboy fries to loaded baked potatoes — feel like old friends at the table, the kind that never overstay their welcome but enrich the experience in quietly satisfying ways.

While the crowd tends to grow as the sun sets, the service maintains a genuine attentiveness, making sure guests feel cared for despite the busy room. Whether passing through or making an evening of it, Top Notch Texas BBQ offers a grounded, familiar comfort, where the focus is on good food and the slow unfolding of shared local moments.

Ordered the chicken fried steak and it was excellent. Perfectly tender, flavorful, and served with lots of gravy. Pinto beans had a kick to them.

We came in for some quick barbecue and it was all good--had ribs, sausage, and pulled pork. The meat was good, and the potato salad was okay, it did taste like the green beans were from a can, which is not what I expected. The service was fast and friendly.

Pretty cool bbq house! Very large place and gets pretty bust towards evening as there is not much around these parts. Despite long lines someone came out shortly after i came in. Food was ready momentarily and was absolutely delicious. This place is reasonably priced, too!

Absolutely loved the place although I found the chicken steak to be pretty poorly made, the ribs, brisket, sausage and the baked potato were great, and my favorite surprisingly was the Turkey.

We had the pulled pork (lean), it was delicious. My husband ordered the half rack ripps (he got the whole one but that's ok), it was really good. He also asked for a jalapeno cheddar sausage which ended up on my plate, it was nevertheless very yummy. Sides were potato salad and backed potato, both very nice. The payment via cc didn't go through so we paid cash. All in all very good food. And the beer was nice too.

This is a great space and our server was great! My bbq was good, but a bit under salted for my personal preference. It was still fresh and good. We also enjoyed our time here. The decor was fun to examine. I didn't drink, but my friend enjoyed his margarita. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area.
